Glimmer. Gloss. Glow. asks Dave Fink, President of Blush Media, LLC, about beauty products, the idea, and all about the brand.
Q: How did you decide that beauty products were your calling?
It isn’t beauty products as much as it’s beauty lovers. We all work very hard at our jobs and there is nothing more rewarding than working on a product that people are excited about. Many years ago I learned that Beauty Enthusiasts are some of the most passionate consumers. Women are willing to put in the hard work and time necessary to discover the hidden gems that make their routine easier and more effective. Beautyfix allows us to help thousands of passionate beauty lovers discover some of the top performing products on the market as tested and reviewed by our trusted panel of experts. I have been so pleased by the reception Beautyfix has had in the beauty community and I have so much fun interacting directly with many Beautyfix members on our interactive website.
Q: How did the idea for BeautyFix come to be?
The idea has been discussed and floating around for a long time – several years really. We created Beautyfix to fill a huge necessity in the industry. Did you know that over 1300 new prestige beauty products hit the market each year? It is staggering. I really have no idea how consumers have the time or energy to sort through the amazing volume of products to find those that work best. And as a beauty brand I would be scared to death to invest in launching a new product. How do they deal with all of the clutter? Well, the natural answer to both of these challenges was Beautyfix! We take the responsibility for doing the research, trying dozens of products each month and picking the top performers for members to try. One of the key focuses we have is credibility. That is why we work with 30 top industry professionals who make up the Advisory Panel and do the actual reviewing leading to the products selected each season. Brands and members recognize that being selected by the Beautyfix panel is an amazing coup.
Q: How long has BeautyFix been in business?
Beautyfix launched October 1, 2008, but it really wasn’t rolling full steam ahead until January. That was really our formal launch. So if you are a member who joined before Jan 1 you are truly one of a handful of people!
Q: Was it difficult to decide on the perfect name for the brand? Who came up with it?
It is quite tough, but luckily there were a ton of really creative people involved in the project. Many of them have been in the beauty industry for many years and most of them are well within our target audience. This definitely helped lead us to a great name. We just love the concept of getting your “Beautyfix.” Selecting a name is not nearly as challenging as selecting the perfect mix of products for each season’s Beautyfix though.
Q: Was it challenging to take the brand from an idea to an actual business plan? What were the biggest obstacles?
Launching Beautyfix definitely was not easy. We really built the company with a modest size team and everyone put in incredibly long hours. We have to manage the technology build out, all of the design work behind the amazing site and all of our marketing tools, build awareness in the industry and relationships with dozens of top beauty brands all the while managing the operations of the entire program. Since Beautyfix is a seasonal program there are very strict deadlines which add an additional layer of complication. With all of the challenges I am very impressed with the success the program has reached. I really do owe it all to an incredibly dedicated team.
Q: How are products selected for the BeautyFix kit?
We put together an unbelievable team of top industry professionals ranging from Celebrity Stylists like Sean James and Rita Hazan to Dermatologists like Dr. Jody Levine to top beauty bloggers such as Teri Cosenzi and Julia Coney. It really is a who’s who of beauty. These are very busy people who all recognize the amazing value Beautyfix brings to an amazing industry and wanted to participate. Each season top beauty brands compete for selection by submitting their hero or new to market products to Beautyfix. We then distribute these products to our pan who test and review each product. The final selection is made based on this formal review process which means that members get to try products selected by some of the top industry professionals.
Q: Is it difficult to select products that will work with the needs of all of your members?
Our long term goal is to work towards customizing kits to meet the specific needs and requests of our members. However, there are so many amazing products that meet the needs of a wide range of skin types and concerns and these are the products we try and select. We also have members who long onto our forums at www.beautyfix.com and swap products with each other. Often times there are products that one member loves enough to be willing to give up one of the other great products to receive a second or to try something they haven’t yet received.
Q: What do you feel draws someone to purchase a particular product or brand?
The number one reason we believe consumers purchase products is the results. This is why it is so important for people to try and discover new products. We created Beautyfix to create a platform to help people discover products they wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to try. We also focus on including only full size or deluxe travel size products which makes sure members get to use the products long enough to actually see results. That way they can choose which products they want to invest in moving forward based on their experience with that product rather than based on marketing or the way a package looks.
Q: What kind of person is the BeautyFix program ideal for?
Beautyfix is ideal for anyone who has a beauty routine and loves to discover new products and ways to improve the results they are seeing from the products they use.
Q: What are the future visions and goals for BeautyFix?
The number one goal right now is to continue searching for the very best and most unique products on the market. Nothing gets us more excited than discovering a hidden gem for our members and then logging on to the site to see the hundreds of member reviews
