If you haven’t seen petrilude work his glossy magic on YouTube check him out here and of course, subscribe!

Q: What is your name? Do you have any nicknames?
Hi, my name is Joshua, and I’m an alco… Juuust kidding!
My birth name is Josh(ua) without the parentheses of course! A few close friends use my last name to get my attention.
People who know me from MySpace years ago call me Figa, & I also hear Petri a lot because of YouTube.

Q: We usually see you sitting down, or doing your happy dance, on camera! How tall are you?
I’m 5’9″ by nature, and 6’3″ in hooker heels.

Q: Does anyone ever tell you that you look like someone famous? If so, who?
Taj Mowry from Disney’s ‘Smart Guy.’ Yeah, that surely made high school super fun.. eh!

Q: How would you describe yourself and your style to someone that has never watched your videos?
Uhm.. how about “Australian Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 24/7 365!” .. I think that’s good!

Q: When did you become interested in cosmetics and beauty products?
Five years ago when I was 19. Looking back at photos is hella scary, but we all start somewhere!!

Q: How did you decide Makeup Artist was the career for you?
I actually didn’t realize how much I really loved doing makeup until I was in cosmetology school and went to my first hair competition to watch everything going on. I was drawn more towards the makeup artists work more than I was the hair. So outside of school I just worked on my skill more and decided I would try to get a job with MAC Cosmetics since at the time I thought they were THEE company to work for (so wrong!). Luckily a new location was opening up so I interviewed for one of the spots and was hired on with a 25 hour position. That really opened my eyes a little more to how much I realy loved doing makeup. After that I really worked hard on marketing myself for freelance work, resulting in me quitting my job at MAC after 2 years and working on actual makeup more being a retail selling robot. The rest is history!

Q: Do you face a lot of discrimination as a male involved in the makeup community?
In the community itself, no. Outside, just a little. People who are part of the makeup community are accustomed to seeing guys doing/wearing makeup all the time. Outside of that it scares or shocks a lot of people, but what can ya do!

Q: Is it difficult to work with the different skin tones and features of new models and clients when you have to instate your creative vision quickly?
No, not at all! I always tell people to practice on themselves as much as possible for a reason. Some people think its easier to work on new models all the time when starting out, but if you don’t know your own face good enough to do your makeup flawless in the dark, how can you do someone elses in the light? Once you know how your face works, its a lot easier to take a look you’ve done, or invisioned and alter it to better fit another person’s features and skin tone.

Q: What is your philosophy on beauty and makeup? Can anyone do it wrong?
THERE ARE NO RULES! That I absolutely cannot stress enough!! If you like how something looks, what other people think doesn’t matter.
My 4 tips of sorts to successful makeup:
1. Think of makeup like an accessory, if it doesn’t look right you can take it off.
2. You’re not signing the lease on a house when you apply an eye shadow. It’s not a long term commitment so have fun with it.
3. If you’re going to wear it, you might as well let them see it!
4. Take risks!

Q: Who or what are your inspirations as far as fashion and beauty?
My biggest inspiration is waking up every day. Inspiration is around everyone 24/7, no matter where you are. Its up to you, me, or whoever to put it to good use.

Q: Do you prefer working with daily looks, glammed-out beauty, or Halloween/stage makeup creations?
I like it all. I have just as much fun doing bridal or everyday makeup as when I paint a whole body to look like a gay pride parade float. As long as the music is going, I’m in the zone.

Q: What are a few of your “obsessions” right now (Foods, designers, television shows, songs, etc.)?
Contrary to popular belief food in general is always an obsession with me. Boys gotta eat! nomnom.. But I never get tired of hearing Daft Punk, they’re amazing! You can play their ‘Homework’ album at any club today, and even though its from 1995 people will still go bat$*^# crazy over it and it usually gets everyone a lot more hyped than music made today.
I don’t watch too much television, if I do you know its going to be Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. The Boondocks, and The Venture Bros. = greatest shows ever.

Q: What got you started doing videos on YouTube?
I was asked by quite a few people numerous times on a makeup community on livejournal.com to do a video for contouring and highlighting. I was already friends with Leesha (xSparkage) at the time, and she finally pushed me to make one. Once I did, the requests started rolling in and I’ve been doing videos since.

Q: How does it feel to have over 39,000 people care about you and your opinions?
That is totally bonkers to me!! Its amazing to know so many people appreciate what I do, and value my opinions on things. I learn so many new things from my subscribers too! It is very rewarding to know what I’m doing in my free time is welcomed by so many people.

Q: How has YouTube affected your life?
Quite a bit. Before I was “omg its the crazy haired guy from MAC” now I hear “omg its petrilude!” I’m still adjusting to having people recognize who I am when I’m out and about, but its totally cool meeting new people everywhere I go because of it. Sometimes the places you get recognized aren’t the greatest (airport bathroom), but it sure does make leaving the house a lot more eventful!

Q: What do your friends and family think about love for beauty products, and your YouTube channel?
My friends talk about my channel more than I do, its so strange! I can’t carry on a conversation with them anymore without hearing about something I said in my latest tutorial. When it comes to my family the are probably the most open people you will ever meet, so nothing phases them. As long as I’m not doing something that harms another person, they will cheer me on no matter what.

Q: We know you love your subscribers, but is there anything that you get sick of being told or asked?
I don’t really like it when people say, “this look is too dramatic for me, I could never pull it off.” Tutorials are there for suggestions, and tips you don’t have to use everything we use, or do it exactly like us. Just take the info that is given to you and then tweak it to better fit your wants and needs.

Q: What draws you to buy a certain product or brand of makeup?
The first thing to pull me in is packaging. Once the packaging has lured me in, I’ll test it. If i don’t think the product is actually good for what I need it to do, fancy packaging or not I won’t buy it and move on to the next best thing.

Q: What are some of your absolute favorite beauty products?
Toothpaste and anything dealing with skin care!!! Once the smile and skin are taken care of everything else is a cake walk.

Q: Do you have any beauty secrets or tips that you think most other people don’t know?
Invest in hemorrhoid cream! Even if you don’t have ‘that’ kind of problem its a quick fix for a lot of other things like under eye bags, & unwanted activity (bumps) on the skin.

Q: Can you tell us some fun facts that we probably don’t know about you?
I can do back flips, and stand on my hands for long periods of time.

Totally! keep an ear out for it!!

Oh, this is so cool! I don’t watch every one of Josh’s videos but he has such charisma, he’s the type of friend I’d love to have. He must be brave; I’m sure he must deal with people that judge and taunt (maybe not directly) but I think he has awesome style – even if I’m only a neutral girl!

Hello Petrilude: I have been looking at your videos for sometime. I love your talents, and your ideas. You have given me such inspiration on fashion looks to just being and bringing out the creativity I have in myself. Please continue to provide “How To Do” make-ups, you are truly the best.

    I LOVE YOU.

Man, you are just amazing! I only discovered you this past Halloween (while looking for ways to paint up my daughter like a devil), watched the Unzipped tutorial and have been a rabid fan ever since. Please keep those tutorials coming, because we all love them! Your friendly, approachable attitude combined with your knowledge and no-nonsense explanations make your videos perfect for people who really want to learn how to do what you do. They are fun to watch and very informative! My faves are the leopard and the ventriloquists’ dummy, although the nutcracker one that I just saw tonight was very good as well.

Hey, if you are taking requests, do a tutorial about how to make a 46-year-old married mom of three look as gorgeous as you do when you’re in drag! Now there is a project for you! Ha ha! I’d happilly be your guinea pig, but we’re miles apart. What I really love about your attitude is that you seem to be fearless. Like you said in Rule #2 above, you’re not mortgaging the house to apply eyeshadow, so have fun with it. Those are very wise words! I’ve learned a lot from them. The voices in my head, when I’m in the mirror, have completely changed from “what the hell are you doing, and who do you think you are?” to “Okay, Josh said I have to blend it this way to get this particular effect.” It’s made a rather large difference to my outlook! I feel vindicated now, fooling around and having fun!

I promise I really will shut up soon, but first I have to ask this: Have you ever considered taking up painting? You already swing a pretty good brush, and it’s plain that you have a strong creative streak as well as a good eye for color. Think about it: If you can sculpt a three-dimensional face with shadows and highlights to look like a cat, it would be a cinch for you on a flat surface! There would be a learning curve for sure, but you already know everything you need to know about light and dark, and the importance of shapes and shadows. I know it’s not your thing right now, but some day, if you ever get bored . . . .

    Much love and admiration, -M.
